You probably dream about a quiet place, a rest moment where you can muse and think about ideas, with no necessary goal. Or you would probably have some time, efficient time without being disturbed. No glory, fair enough, just simple life, we forgot. The fact is that, today, too many screens with interactive propositions that blink all over the day, make us fragile, distracted and less efficient. Times have changed, but not obviously for the single “better” side. We used to spend time, having time to discover, doubt, try while we are now, just interrupted, all over each single day. Is it this kind of life we need, want, desire to recover the ability to make good choices? Disturbed we are, troubled with no “cold time” to think deeply or work without being dissipated by ongoing commercials, “friends” requests or redundant news.
Oh I see and know what kind of subject I’m talking about. You probably didn’t have yet the conscient and awareness of it, but we’re immerged with digital signals, that we can’t deal with. Too many messages, too many occurencies, too many interruptions: and that’s the way you work more stressed, losing time anytime you’re disturbed, getting more and more difficulty to work efficiently with business matters, all along without being ongoing interrupted. That’s the sad way of “mainstream information”, a kind of flow you can’t stop and sort of, because it’s now to the reader to make his own opinion about contents and what he can stare at. That’s the bottomline of any “UGC”, where the reference is maybe hard to find and to believe. Can we believe all we receive? Can we trust anyone who “says”? And without even talking about the relevance of information, it’s about the whole “mass”, that flows on and on, every day.
We’re now living in a “microspaces” of times where we can spot, snap and do every little pieces of actions, like medias but like recipients too, where we swallow lots of datas…be careful to digest it!

Interruption

Finally we could say that “interruption draws creativity, flexibility and curiousity”. So, our brain has just to “teach how to deal with it, like darwinism theory for survivance”. The fact is that no one can really say actually, if there’s a strong progress doing this or in the long term an inefficiancy driving business and modern work to a major change. May we dream of an enjoyable “empty space” soon, maybe not. Up to you, to suffer daily this pollution or change your behavior. Healthier, simplier searching for “better”, more than “more”. Remember it’s worthier to “be”, than to “have”…

“Objects now become kind of chatterbox and the world shifts as an huge connected information system”

Yes we must now consider objects as a real part of social movement, even if social genuinely means « interaction between two human beings », they can enter the game of socialization…How far, when, for which uses/features? Future will tell…

2020: 20 Billions of connected objets; which ones, which services behind and for which uses? What might we face in organizations, skills, value chains and industries?

« We don’t GO on the WWW, we are IN the WWW » (J. de Rosnay, 2008). In this case we can’t ignore the new environment in which we’re living, wired, connected, localized, targeted…? What is our trigger of rejection or how far will we go, in including this obsessing world, that is up to us more and more.

That is to say with many questions to push ourselves in another world, framed with robots, domotics, and domestic suppliance, increasing interrogations about the destiny, goals and playing field. While complete digital revolution leads to many disasters in balanced industries, destroying employment in short term, what could bring more automation of flows, relations and process?

For the opportunistic point of view, it’s far from now, several huge enhancements to come, in a larger scale for domestic, economic and social matters. When coming to mass market, leading the wheel can be an astonishing venture in sectors like:

  • Tracing products, animals, reducing sanity risks and increasing the visibility on nurturing, growing in real time
  • Improvements on supply chains and « just in time », reducing stock wastes and better control
  • Equipment for handicapped people or old people, to enhance daily life with smart objects or function, and for health monitoring with things like flesh sensors (EES2) or with connected wifi body scale from Withings
  • Production improvement with robots like farming robots
  • Monitor, schedule and show the mass of available energies for a town, area or more, increasing the action on it and on the way we consume it: something making possible ups and downs and informing people when and how to use it (see an example with dontflushme)
  • Connected cities with huge projects involving simple objects with new roles and useful faces like intelligent pavements in Toulouse, France that supplies energy when you walk on them or ”Simplicity” project from Keiichi Matsuda (Domesti/City) and LivingPanIT, future tools for bright cities. Check also Songdo City in South Korea, aimed to welcome more than 75.000 citizens in 2014
  • Lifestyle environment: domestics, visual and personal comfort, intelligent paper with paperzoom, or fridges ordering themselves what’s relevant for the household’s needs, relating to stock or food desires. Taking in count the necessary monitoring of your weight, mood or health state
  • Self-domestic with « things » like green plants, furniture, design…), the silent communication (“utility” for house domestics, alone…)

While we see lots of interesting opportunities, we may consider the downsides and potential dangers that come with digital era, and could explode with the complete participation of connected objects, like :

  • Hacking: with the economic exploitation for the silent information war: stocks, financial system, gold and raw materials, everything that could trick valuation but also nuclear and military settlements connected in some ways could be hackable…
  • What about electronic polls and the ability to cheat and trick democracy?
  • Tomorrow, school and exam results may be built by machines, increasing the ability to exploit a fault in the whole chain and leading to discredit of levels and graduations?
  • How far build and trust open data: do we fight to show anything we can (see Pachube), a whole community lead site with usermoderation and the degree of trust that is questioned so far?
  • Automatic terminals that guide, manage and secure aerial traffic, train regulation and so long: who can we trust, relating to security matters?
  • Telco system with parallel ways (social networks) with lots of information publicly available everywhere, because no one can verify the sense, truth capital and relevance?

Very hard times in trying to imagine the different faces and practical aspects of this new behavior, allowing objects to be linked and part of the global conversation. From now, protocols have already shifted to new (with for example ipv6), to welcome and hold the huge growth of connections, increased by the participation of these smart objects…But as any physical people, we can see “reputation” and need of protection of digital identity. Some solutions like myID.is or myid.com will probably grow to guarantee the trustiness and truthfulness of exchanges and conversations. That means the identification must be on the object level and not necessary on the object’s owner level, who can change

We all already know that mobile devices and mobile behavior will be the dominant platform for datas, communication and entertainment tomorrow, then mobile web and connected objects will stand as  beacons of business in this incredible story.

There’s probably something attractive with everything seeming to be linked and connected. Just like losing our innocence, our ability to “think” and hold a sheer relation. When it’s about progress, one can be ready for anything to rock the boat…But how far? We’re still in the growth for “just” only fighting poverty and analphabetism and increasing digital uses may lead to writing mistakes and in the end, complete lack of knowledge about it! What about grammar, syntax, style effects that create a conversation and build a codified exchange between humans?

We so have to consider all these opportunities, integrating them into a whole ecosystem before they take control of us…Give rules, a place for everyone and everything, including interactive roles in our lives and dream about new “social networks for objects.” And then, pray that objects will invite us in their circle, where they will exchange datas, signals…conversations? A binary world from 0 to 1…

But who will be responsible for these shared contents or actions lead by the connected objects? Which legal matters: The owner? The user? The network?

In fact a subject not really new, that takes some time to land off but whose applications will help in many sectors with strong uses like breaking the digital rupture, domestics compliance and lots of local and practical innovations. Then « objects went social » could have been a HG Wells book. Shall we say « social » talking about objects when described as « media which enable interactivity between two or more humans »?

Last part of three set, considering the outputs/outcomes on resources, driven by a “always-on” society, with:

  • raising loyalty and sensibility to more information, messages and requests
  • searching for trust and truth, in this ocean of crowded “social” advertising: how to cope with it to build a strong “wired” reputation
  • the effects on production cycle, wastes and ability to modelize business before it runs: a real opportunity to change minds, process and get the best results overall
I’ve already posted something on it, linking loyalty and mobility with the wealth of being “targetable”, on the run…or not. The “SoLoMo” concept since then ran and seems to grow up every day. Seeing how the Groupon, KGBDeals, LivingSocial or whatever, recruited as members and notoriety, can now get in building local deals in keeping a huge community of deal hunters. The increase of interest for these models, even if the future is not really clear about their cash and resources needs, seems to grow. they just have now to find the great balance with retailers they ad for and in the revenue sharing…But for the customer, the output is clearly fair: getting in the best plan for any service, each day. The likeliness and accessibility of the anytime, anywhere, any device process generate most fans and successfull outcomes.
The other part, leading to valuable outcomes seems to be the transparency and truth, required in business. And according to more reputation, guided by social commerce and recommandation, it may be the next core key required by connectivity environment. The more you are targeted, the more you need to get the head of the basket to sort all the sollicitations: good or bad ones…The market of “reputation”, and the advising included in this whole wave just starts and make this wired situation more interesting yet: getting the good clues with local/social in searching for customer experiences, tips and promotions. Foursquare for example, turned gaming and tips, because the feature of “only” checking is not sufficient enough now: time is for adding content (tips, twits, recommendation…), making the live moment more “live”, realistic and valuable for the network fellows. The whole value for network is supposed to be the square of its number, that means that somehow value is brought by any people in a balanced part. And information is value now, because scarcity and results from the sharing of it, gives a large potential of consumption. Give good reputation in a network means that value included inside any member may value the whole set.
But that’s not all: digital settlements and features mean deep changes in design, production and sampling. The tremendous abilities to get a modelized result before launching a whole production run leads to a better fine tuning in building offers, services and products. We called so much “test markets”, when we had abilities to run short cycles and produce samples to collect some consumers’ opinions, but being always wired allows us to get one step before: drawing and having models, with true reality, without launching the whole production. Getting returns from teams, cross functionnal trials and other samples increase the “pre-production” knowledge and facilitates corrections, last minute changes and includes feedback. Imagine only on the movie industry, what gives such technologies on cost reduction, allowing 3D modelization to build scripts, scents, scenariis with the ability to show “complete shots”, without any effort…
Anything we share, talk or stare about now, is on the uphold of digital processes and needs to be stared with brand new vision, that unchains any abilities and free our mindsets. What’s the frontier of our imagination? Guess it’s not been invented yet, and needs new ways of thinking, even in the necessary approach to be found. But I think the challenge is awesome and valuable, as a trip with the unknown, considering the deep well of opportunity facing us. Mc Luhan wrote about the concept of global village many years ago, drawing at that time a warning for any generation to come. But the real question is not “how far is global, this village” but “where are the disrupt trends that are available and change the way we think, create, build and deliver“…The challenge is waiting for anyone of us.

Second part now of three set, considering the effects on resources, driven by a “always-on” society, with:

  • dealing with HR 2.0 behaviors
  • ability to swap resources and change in more flexibles ways, any opportunity into a strategic purpose
  • what we can see in our daily lives with simple features at home: security, care, compliance, supply & information access, knowledge…
Being blinded or not aware of changes must not lead to definitive deafness to these changes: if you don’t know how the future will be, then draw it could be a better way to learn the unknown. And soon you’ll be caught with competitors, mates or neighboors who will change up your life…So don’t be late and choose to afford this incredible new twirl as your next friend.
  • HR puzzles with 2.0:
The story is that HR d’ont really know how to manage 2.0 because they don”t adapt their own process to such behaviors or platforms. Allow this new kind of collaboration need huge changes in organization: way to collaborate, share information, trust and be ready to “lose” at a glance, some time in prowling on social platforms. That starts with sensible things as secrecy rules in companies: who knows? Who can say and for which situations? How detect a strong reason to betray the company? How detect the bad mood and the dangerous viral spiral of silent revolution? Seems a long (now) time, since employees started to take in their own hands, their own destiny…and career. Why? Because talent management is often only a word in companies, just to feel good and appear like innovators…While turnover rises. Lots of social sites, allowing to rule and manage “people reputation” bloomed, lead by viral behaviors. Friending, linking at the speed of light make you happier than if you wait your next evaluation meeting with your busy manager, who will maybe listen (and hear) your requests…
  • Resources management:
Dealing with digital solutions and having a 2.0 company means a very flexible platform and mindset, at all levels: cost of work, flexibility of schedules and planning, multiskills profiles and so on. And it’s not supposed to be native and initially designed, with old models. We saw as HR are important to be stared on another point of view if companies want to succeed in transformation and exploit all the opportunities of flexibility. Now companies must fiond partners and stakeholders who can play the same game on the whole value chain, avoiding the fearing bottleneck. Tools like social platforms increase a lot tha ability to share, exchange and modify a process, on ongoing reaction and improvement, creating light sticking to core functions. And that reactivity makes a company more “time-to-market” and able to take opportunities on the long run, but with long tail targets too.
  • Home and life-as-usual appliances:
Having tested the whole chain of connectivity in professional environment makes you more exigeant and waiting for new things and bright applications at home. Linking all devices, wiring all the house and becoming a whole datawarehouse for the family, we all see the huge advantages for such a framework: data sharing, security, automatic warnings for intrusion, triggers, ovens piloting, freezing monitoring, and others “machine to machine” global assignments. Domotic verse 2.0 might make this huge sector rise as never done, with all abilities to connect, act and interactions that are now in fact, concrete. Easiness, care and customization allow techs learning and acceptation more possible than ever.
Creating and framing the future, but for what?
Stay tuned for the third and last part, with “outcomes/outputs driven by connectivity” on the same channel…

First part of three set, including the changes triggered by the connected world in which we live. We’ll underline there all that is described by “way of doing”, now, considering things we can’t stop and have to cope with.

Did you ever live, the incredible speed of information spreading, as you first have an idea, start to tell to a friend…and what becomes next: the one tells to a friend, who tells to a friend…six degrees later world knows all about it. That shapes what is to be said: living in a connecting world allows us to save time, moments and whole phases in building innovation. You can now make work a huge diversity of people, around the clock, in a single project, getting insights from the best of them, challenging everything from seeds to concrete plan. And it changes the vision we have on anything is possible or not: speed of sourcing, evaluating and throwing an insight, our ability to get information on marketplaces, competitors or competition in a larger view. Branding or modeling prototypes and viewing them in “real” second world (3D, social games, virtual environments…). Thrilling isn’t it. Not at all but a strong opportunity.

And if it’s for us, it’s for competitors, too. Competition keeps us awake (must?), and dangers come faster than ever: from stakeholders to suppliers, or even closer partners, anyone can, without having it in mind, leak on important secrets. And for a time-based competition, connectivity might probably change the game: speed of renewal cycles, defining, correcting and sourcing make markets more demanding on the service level and innovation. Being faced in daily life to digital shift, consumers have to adopt, learn and make them, the opportunities of technology.

In production fields, the reduction of wastes, mistakes or return, driven by a more accurate forecast of volumes, needs and trends go directly on the bottom-line. Engineers can have a close feedback with marketers, for model design, duplication, customization…and on-the-go modifications. That’s an incredible change in the process, always wired, and the ability to evolve, on ongoing periods, and raise the sustainable facet of production: less wastes, less energy, less stress, as it takes part of the whole shipment way of delivering goods or services.

Don’t you know that in poor areas (like described in BOP markets with books like), 7% on the income of poors is dedicated to connectivity expenses, often before cleaning, safety water, health or food…? The only step for isolated zones to be linked, bankable and start a tiny commercial activity is to be…connected. Connectivity changed the way farmers for example, can set their prices for their crop, because they’re connected (e-choupal system) with bid marketplaces and stocks for the raws they have: they can choose quickly to do or not and with who, they are going to deal.

Hold on for the second part and “connectivity effects on resources”. Stay tuned, and meet the following part soon, here…

We live in a connected world, for sure. Even those who don’t want, won’t escape to changes, they feel, live or suffer. When, how, which ways? Where from, why? New generations can explain because they live in and are confronted to old school and traditional rules, they even sometimes, can’t understand. Codes, habits, rules…How imagine the world in such situations and understand the wealthy mix we can draw benefits from and hold the main direction to sustain the daily life?

I was thinking of writing in last centuries: from stones, to paper, wrting styles and ink, and printers…then digital writing and contents…Such situation meant slow shifts (as we stare technology revolutions go faster and faster), but we will be confronted in a future, where nobody will write anymore, one day…because of the huge invasion of digital supports, we won’t be using pens, stencils and so on, anymore…And at school, nobody will learn writing anymore, because “use” would have disappeared? It’s part of something that hurts me in fact…Living without knowing any letter or figure to write, because keypads or vocal systems would replace them…?

Weird, but not really far from reality…

I started a whole reflection with connectivity effects on “business”…with :

1) the ways it does…:

  • Competition insights, sourcing innovation, ideas or best practices?
  • The Impacts on collaboration and collaborative circles?
  • The way the world is connected and then, how to use marketplaces to reduce time, effort and delay on sourcing information?
  • Sourcing/buying 2.0?
  • Producing with benefits of connected technologies: reducing wastes, errors and returns, thriving simulations
  • Delivering: accuracy, reliance and relevance of supply chain
  • Launching and buzzing: hot to get the word before start…
  • Sales: virtual efficiency, mixed models of distribution (stores and e-business, m-business, social shopping and recommendation…

2) the effects on resources:

  • How to manage resources (people, time, schedules and machines) in a connected world?
  • HR implementation with social networks (pro and personal platforms, dealing with synergies)?
  • New opportunities on live work: always connected, live, home…

3) the outputs/outcomes driven:

  • Loyalty, but reactivity and sensibility: CRM, SRM, CEM…concepts that drive customers motivations and feedback
  • Communities, branding, e-reputation: how to solve the equation of truth and trust?
  • Marketing rules and new ways of improvement: who is the product manager, now?
  • Effects on life cycle of products, brands and relation: shortening delay without throwing the essential

I hope some bright ideas will surge and converge to identify a simple plan and path, to drive new business and companies, in this ocean of opportunities. As we accept opportunities more than threats and open our minds to change the cards and adapt enough our perception and abilities to do so…

First step to come, stay tuned for “the way it does”
