Between 22th and 24th of 2013, September was organized the “socialgood event”, by @mashable and other partners, to share and plan about how digital and social could help building a better future (#2030now).

It’s been years from now that many conferences bloomed (TED, Ignite, SXSW…) rising talents, needs and desire for social features. Panels, keynotes, witnessing…so many opportunities to learn and share this new awesome passion for collaboration spaces. I like these moments. They remind me some fantastic steps like:

1)   I meet there the “social chance…”

…to challenge my opinions and my environment. I like listening to an expert, solving or preventing a new challenge, these events allow to get straight to the point. In a single event, I can learn many things and meet many experts and can network with them. I live in what I call “the human-linked network”

2)   I’m a link like you: a huge network to play…

…where my incredible passion for human contacts calls for more: it engages me to a challenging posture and a more interactive life, with more transparency and trust.. “This is not a matter of quantity but more a mindset of creativity, passion and engagement”. I did it my quote, because that really changed my mind.

3)   I dream like you to invent the future

…what’s more beautiful to overtake results, expectations and outputs. The digital posture makes us more interactive and creative people, who are more concerned in creating the future. I became “addict” of this on going relation where I share insights anytime and anywhere. “the trend is there, and the long tail is wide…”

4)   I create with many folks, things that are built to stay…

…hey wait a minute? There’s nothing more “valuable” than creating together, in a same team. This new vision is settled for a long time. The increasing need to be listened and the signs of working together call for a whole participation, in the new “crowd innovation”. Innovation  “from people, for people” , a complete new framework that redefines relations, power and working circles. The ones that companies break to implement in structures and project management, where decision has nothing to see with hierarchy or power. Widen against top-bottom reactions, to engage and become more social.

5)   I believe that social graph attracts social…

…the incredible passion for collaborative calls for many initiatives and draws talents.  Youngest or oldest, everybody is involved, crossing frontiers, cultures and generations. Technology forced us to overcome our fears and do what was impossible: communicate and share the next big pictures. “The more you pratice, the more you like”. This is now finally my lifestyle.

Are you already part of it? In which way, actions, outputs? Please share and tell your social life, as an incredible window for us to learn more…

Zapping was yesterday a concrete behavior, linked to our tv use. Jumping from channel to channel, an eye on remote control, the other on printed tv magazine, phenomena that exploded with arrival of satellite and cable tv, with several and diversified channels. With profusion, we had no choice to pay less attention to “carpe diem” instant, in the benefit of being champions of “more”. Last development fury and for VOD programs, prove that there is another level we just passed: holding time. The way we manage our relations is becoming a accurate exercise between, real friends, “interest” friends, randomized friends and others we could live without.
And I must admit, profusion of social web, lead to some equal behavior with so called “friends” encountered on social networks. There are even tools (machines!) to make work for you, in adding contacts you’ll never know…A kind of action, to feel someone important and being secured? not sure. Before social web, who, while reading this paper, had 2.000 real  friends? who could manage with such? Yet, I didn’t find anyone, even if it was his job, with these characteristics…;-)

BlueDrops

If social web brought ability for anyone of us to write, talk or read anything in various topics, it exists because of some who invest lots of time, to share best of the web. And if free model blew ever else model yet, it doesn’t mean that there is no value, and attention to be stared in such situation. Keeping attention and sustaining speach and sharing, doesn’t match with zapping mates, who collect friends and contacts as stickers. Some said, we can’t handle with more than 150 contacts, in a interesting and regular relationship. I know it’s really easy to have a huge audience, that can hear what you say, but is “hear” sufficient to hold a relation, that could be wealthy for everyone?

We, in fact are caught in a “hub” of information, encounterings, meetings, accelerated by technology, and in this context, high is the power of media to confuse ourself in an ocean of true/false conversations. We just have now to learn again to sort, make our mind of real kind of life, real values, real sense. Storm for the twirling RSS, won’t make us blind or deaf, if we make the effort of reflection, to value information, content and where it comes from: even if trust is an essential enlightening skill to cope with too much information, we usually and formerly now, don’t try to evaluate. 2.0 is the best way to viral any information (rumour or hoax), for free and for…fake too. Confronted with this, even if tools have risen so much, more than we can sometimes handle, man must control machine and channels: obligation is done to stare and watch what kind of receiver we want to be. Zapping is so light, too light for attention anyone must have, to warm sender, and to be a accurate receiver.

My parents did have a job for their life, I’ve myself had 5 until now, and my children are on the way to do several ones at a time…Time is running out and emergency to make the point and use the compass again to reborn and take time to think at where we go and what we do: give value, sense and aim to who we meet, and social places like blogs are great examples to give a new direction to argumentation. That’s what I try to do, for passion and attention to others, others we often can’t see for hedonism, egoism or unattention. And that’s not why there is too much networks, that we must waste relationship by zapping too fast, while there is relevant information to listen. Machine and techs not for what they ARE, but for what they DO. And fortunately we have brain and emotion, yet…

On June 5, I went to Diegem, near Brussels, to think tomorrow event, organized by An de Jonghe, CEO of TrendQ, 2.0 consulting and business corporation. An contacted me few months ago, for me to come, to see some people we don’t use to see in others events ; Located at Crowne Plaza, event started, with a short introduction, on day plan, especially, for the short appear of Flemish Minister of Economics, Patricia Ceysens.

Belgium is a little country, like France, but more international I think – is it a consequence of Brussels head of European community ? -, really cordial and warm place.

Day’s started with Geer Conard, IT consulting (5.309 direct first degree connections on LinkedIn, and one of the most famous networker in Belgium) ; demonstration about his now social life, built 3 years, after he formerly hated social networks…then headed for it, by some random meets ; he described the several types of networkers : passive networker, conservative networker, reactive networker, hyperactive networker, proactive networker. Forecast for 2014 : most of through online networking tools…Gave tips from Thomas Power, 10 tips : Collect people, Respect geography, start a club, relax and be yourself, quality vs quantity, listen for links words, make a match, disturb our comfort zone, read new material, manage your reputation
And last “don’t sale anything” : the best tip…the business is done throughout but in another ways…
“networking is giving ; not taking…It may take several years of giving, before receive” ; trust reputation, manage your reputation. I think he understood many things about that matter !

Then Wim de Waele from IBBT spoke about Research center, flamish government into, on ICT broadband between companies and government, mobile television with Gand project (telenet); user experience makes the product (first tip), example with a baby who plays with an Iphone !
Connected devices in 2012 : sensors over 1.000.000.000.000 (computers, appliances/toys, entertainment, industrial/automobile, handhelds…) and future : wearable computing, localisation, machine-to-machine, smart dust,…The next step : user centric apps, the main purpose (think about old people and home care)

Then Patricia Ceysens (ministry economics and ICT) with model of economic development ; Porter model
Factor driven economy, efficiency driven economy, innovation driven economy (corps, international, innovation) ; must develop R&D, innovation in terms of output (vs input), R&D&&Entreprenership (applications for results coming out) ; spoke about Innovation sources : notice 36% come from customers…only 4% from universities ; turn user = problem to user = solution and “users must adopt innovation”

After a short break, Octavio Pitaluga, CEO of TEN, topexecutivesnet (business community) spoke about “Business Network Officer”, a new function in corporations, which may be developed fast ; he his one of the first CNO Chief Network Officer. No way about the number of contacts, matter what you add to yours (value)
“Japanese people are organized as a network” ; and that’s why it’s the second powerful country in the world
success story : importance of trust, basic of relationship…
Ideal profile for this function : higher values, strategic thinker, credibility, challenge-driven, conflict management, human developer, creative&participative,…
Business Network Management : BNM Team, Goals, win-win, partner status, action plan, manage network ; consequences : increase relationship value, higher leverage, wealth creation. “Employees must be aware of BNM process too”

Then started Emeric Ernoult from affinitiz, French CEO about “web 2.0 for business : hype or opportunity ?”
⇨ new marketing/communication channel
⇨ set the goals, mesure (how you spend on classical ways ?) and compare it with 2.0 solutions
⇨ adwords really expensive in big quantities
⇨ 45.000 French lawyers + blogs the best way to be on top of Google = efficiency with blog platform for lawyers (practices, success stories…)
⇨ 850 lawyer’s blogs now, 10.000 posts, 20.000 comments, 75% of the traffic comes from Google !
⇨ ROI : 14 times less expensive than adwords buying

showed us how about social 2.0 solutions for marketing and sales approaches, vs classical ones, can be really less expensive and more efficient.

Sagi Richberg, Vshake, founded GroupGain, a new social shopping community, group aggregation, mercata, mobshop, accompagny ; buyers lower the price by being buying together the same product ; start of “Social Shopping”

In the aim of HR recruiting, Bas Van de Haterd, HR, recruiting, blogging consulting spoke about savinge money for HR recruiting : LinkedIn for nearly free, is high efficiently powerful !
Map your network, define a good profile, use your relationships, get introductions (think about incentives) are tips to succeed in HR recruiting ; don’t be too hurry in your “dates” : try to engage a cool and real relation before asking for business. Not THE question in the first date ; wait , give, share ; then ask ; people want to business with people they like…Talked about Alumni…most of corps forget the employees they fired and don’t want to heard about them anymore ; but the story is another to tell : time and people change…And don’t forget to mix online and offline social networks : according to companies brand behavior’s line…

And Hendrik Deckers, CEO of CIOnet and partner at Ecademy Belgium, presented us a portal for CIO professional networking talked about “Building Niche Networks”, Value of people then is really high, because selected ; niche communities with high level (high attendings too) ; 3 groups of participation, offline and online ; membership, sponsorship and advertising. Purposed a definition of value of network : n x Q x a (numbers x Quality x activity – frequency)

Day’s finished with a flash and pop talk with Sabine Allaeys, from Minifizz, and how she built the young and fashion universe for girls from 14 to 25 years old, on Web and mobile fields. Partnership and fashion world is making the deal with minifizz.

We had traditional “Elevator Pitch” for young startups, making opportunity for a short three minutes hot speak, then headed to break place for a nice cocktail and networking time, with all team.

A nice day with nice people. I will get back for sure, Belgium makes its own 2.0 revolution out there. If  you want to share it, be there !

Premium belongs to leaders. Economics rules tell us that when you’re in difficult competition, with markets, products, etc, you need to be an example, create the path, set the pace. You need to set the standards and the best practices. Being a leader is not easy…in the lights, under pressure, driven to success or failure, but always setting the standard. For those who are, have been, or will be, it’s a demanding job !
Remember this basic economic rule : “a corporation that is a leader in its market or product, must show the way and be the reference, label and trace the path”…By achieving these goals, those market leading firms receive favorable publicity, financial success and top of mind position with future consumers, those who already are, or those who will be.

But in the same time, competitors will look to exploit weaknesses, in cutomer service, quality of product, whatever. They will look for chinks in your armor. Something you didn’t foresee. And like horse of Troy, competitor, by creativity, starts to take stocks to leader, and through creativity, will begin to make inroads.

And the margin of leadership begins to decrease (tip : leaders are often handicapped by our huge size, and ability to respond quickly). Suddenly, RIP. Then the effect of “losing the premium fee” starts to show…Because “you lose more than you win”…You lose sales, value, customers…and innovation – things that made you the leader in the first place. And like a fallen movie or music star, sunset is coming…

The same cycle applies to social media leaders.

Some lead the way, some turn around, others play with it, but sometimes it seems more to be a race for information owning and spreading (to nowhere ?) than the result of genuine demand. Who can remain a social media leader without any audience anymore ? Is there any kind of scale in losing audience (ie just like premium fee losing for corps), with a wrong step ? What could drive a leader to such a no way road ?

We all follow some of these social media leaders, and in our most secret thoughts, dream of becoming one don’t we ?

Well, in my opinion, developping a social life is quite easy, when no accident comes. And it must be ; listening and staring, sharing on phase two, then becoming someone that others listen to. We grow step by step, as we attract a greater audience. There’s no particularly reason for why we were led to silence or loneliness, if we didn’t search for…or provided !

I admit that sometimes, even leaders are boring and sometimes too noisy, invading our space. But we have power to stop following them, to break away, and to “opt-out” as well as “opt-in”. That’s the hard reality of social media. And threats exist for social leaders too ; others who come along with more and fast information, more credible, trustable, actual. It’s maybe the “long tail” too we see everywhere about the web democracy ; one says “we can’t be and have been”. I’m afraid this rule applies to social media too, but anyway, there’s no prize, no award to come, just a collaborative people think tank, with “white meanings”…For awesome times, awesome people.

We’re now all in, in green matters and problems, definitely in some twirling movement, in hope of savings energies, reduice consuming and waste, giving home to our trash basket (!), and so long. There’s now a lot of new think tank, from little tries to huge organizations (here is some of them), and we can (sure?) sleep more quietly.

In the meantime, come and go movement of information, goes faster, each day we are front of new exchanges, e-mail reading and throwing (!), new APIs, where people search for the best award to come (and particularly ventures ones…;-) ) ; we try to cope with the “wave” of post, lines, pictures, video and so long representations of social activity. And we spend so much time, that we can, for a while, consider that there’s probably something which is bad for sustainable development. Probably…

Why ? How ?

Think about so huge computing frames needed to supply such apps, think about energy spendings all time, all around the world (included yours…!), wires, waves, broadcasts and web infrastructures, think about so huge events like, TEDLeWeb3SWSXPlugg and so may others, where many people from other side of the planet come to speak, hear and share…with planes, trafic, polluting the earth (tip: I know that airflights pollution provides “only” 4% of carbon production, but anyway, evil is done…). With these such early new behaviors in front of information, knowledge and share, so much computing time, so much computers new bought (most of them laptops, with high needs of energy, but also, green batteries now…), we have to manage in a regular and responsability swear. Maybe another “driving card”, provided by good sense and always reminded ; I will try to purpose some items in many (to complete, you have to !) :

  • on energy savings, probably trying to use devices, never turning them off, prefering the sleep mode, and let it sometimes in rest, avoiding to much warm situations ; don’t use too much devices for the same stuff, prefering multi frame work, device converge comes with fast steps now…(you’ll find out there too some excellent and more complete topics: WattWattLowerFootPrint for example)
  • print ? what for ? there has been so many trees driven to “death” to make books…digital reading is not so far hard now (and reactive, interactive)
  • as you sort wastes in your trash, be careful about :
    • what you send to who, avoiding to much pollution ; everyone knows how about it’s easy to send, forward, copy…to many people who don’t care about the subject, prefering the quietest position in sending message to all ; and message tools now are really talented to do it…
    • what you like to say, how you say it and maybe, the effects of your initial text is sometimes more polluting than useful
    • being short, kind and friendly way ; battle and affront situations make rising the temperature, and getting nervous. Bad for your health, you know…
    • what you keep in any further useful, with a hopeful and maybe feeling…in your memory, folders, messaging…
    • what you don’t keep (!), driving you to make some another research, spending time and energy again
  • think about doing nothing : not give up but doing anything else, which change your ideas, make some progress about thoughts, talks and what you heared ; you became more efficient next time
  • post some picture about nature, elements, animals : there’s so many of them who are going to vanish, in the next few years…
  • having some plants with you can speak with (I know some of you think “he must have turned nut…” ; kind guy…) ; not at all. Speak in front and bout nature is revealing it ; making it real and real. As you may never forget any piece of existence…and for last full of doubt, see here

Well I won’t in any case, too complete scheduled, but gave some ideas, some few elements of thinking. Social networking must be an advance on all fronts, but not anything else but IT progress, wasting others opportunities (and there’s a lot of human ones). There’s probably some simple acts to think about, to make it concrete.

Maybe this post is useless ; maybe not. I had fun about writing it, maybe you will in reading…You tell me.

And don’t forget to water the plant behind you.
