You probably remember about M. McLuhan’s theories about media, considering what we mostly hold from an exposure to a “message”, through a “media”, is the media itself, more than the message…Strange but finally, and even it’s more complicated than this simple figure, it shows us the increased complexity of our brain. But now and there, this is not the main item I would like to talk about, but transpose the results in the 2.0 era. But not only. I mean, it’s not only in 2.0 features we could find, what I’m gonna explain.

The rising period where information comes and goes from nowhere, and is spread everywhere by everyone leads to a global cloud of too much information. Different shapes, times and screens, devices, breaks…All around us increases the risk for mistake, misinformation or hoax, disturbing our ability to think about the content and the essence of the message. As we try to navigate into this misfit ocean, we’re usually lazy to get the facts and go to easiness: listen to a famous, well-known star, influencer, relevant speaker and so long. So we get more from “who” than really from “what” or “how”. Here we go, listening a kind of information guru, waiting for holy words, who we don’t remind after. The only thing we can recognize or remember is probably “who” told us, more than the content of the message itself. An incredibly worrying and disappointing fact that means a lot for advertisers. The same effect leading to be aware of “people” like potential medias, the same that creates “value” for people, like medias did before. Why bloggers and influencers are probably difficult to touch/to buy let us more aware of the real contents they deliver: is it because they are famous that contents they provide are interesting or do they really deliver smart contents? Which makes sense?

I do strongly believe we more and more paying attention to who says, than really in the delivered content…A kind of subtile way to believe in icons, influencers, experts moreover but meaning that we must pay double attention to “noise” or information. Elements are probably guided more by the vehicle than the debate. So, the next time, simply ask yourself “whose benefit it is”, and dig deeply to sort what kind of information do we facing, and in the end, who delivered it…Guess you’ll have surprise how naive we can be, when we’re stunned by a so called “expert” and how much we can easily agree without using our brain. The easiness of flow in twitters, blogs, rss…find us in front of the “crowded mass of information”, and who is better than a well known “people” to secure ourselves? Maybe our last instinct of sanity, trying to keep our mind and critical ability enabled!

Zapping was yesterday a concrete behavior, linked to our tv use. Jumping from channel to channel, an eye on remote control, the other on printed tv magazine, phenomena that exploded with arrival of satellite and cable tv, with several and diversified channels. With profusion, we had no choice to pay less attention to “carpe diem” instant, in the benefit of being champions of “more”. Last development fury and for VOD programs, prove that there is another level we just passed: holding time. The way we manage our relations is becoming a accurate exercise between, real friends, “interest” friends, randomized friends and others we could live without.
And I must admit, profusion of social web, lead to some equal behavior with so called “friends” encountered on social networks. There are even tools (machines!) to make work for you, in adding contacts you’ll never know…A kind of action, to feel someone important and being secured? not sure. Before social web, who, while reading this paper, had 2.000 real  friends? who could manage with such? Yet, I didn’t find anyone, even if it was his job, with these characteristics…;-)

If social web brought ability for anyone of us to write, talk or read anything in various topics, it exists because of some who invest lots of time, to share best of the web. And if free model blew ever else model yet, it doesn’t mean that there is no value, and attention to be stared in such situation. Keeping attention and sustaining speach and sharing, doesn’t match with zapping mates, who collect friends and contacts as stickers. Some said, we can’t handle with more than 150 contacts, in a interesting and regular relationship. I know it’s really easy to have a huge audience, that can hear what you say, but is “hear” sufficient to hold a relation, that could be wealthy for everyone?

We, in fact are caught in a “hub” of information, encounterings, meetings, accelerated by technology, and in this context, high is the power of media to confuse ourself in an ocean of true/false conversations. We just have now to learn again to sort, make our mind of real kind of life, real values, real sense. Storm for the twirling RSS, won’t make us blind or deaf, if we make the effort of reflection, to value information, content and where it comes from: even if trust is an essential enlightening skill to cope with too much information, we usually and formerly now, don’t try to evaluate. 2.0 is the best way to viral any information (rumour or hoax), for free and for…fake too. Confronted with this, even if tools have risen so much, more than we can sometimes handle, man must control machine and channels: obligation is done to stare and watch what kind of receiver we want to be. Zapping is so light, too light for attention anyone must have, to warm sender, and to be a accurate receiver.

My parents did have a job for their life, I’ve myself had 5 until now, and my children are on the way to do several ones at a time…Time is running out and emergency to make the point and use the compass again to reborn and take time to think at where we go and what we do: give value, sense and aim to who we meet, and social places like blogs are great examples to give a new direction to argumentation. That’s what I try to do, for passion and attention to others, others we often can’t see for hedonism, egoism or unattention. And that’s not why there is too much networks, that we must waste relationship by zapping too fast, while there is relevant information to listen. Machine and techs not for what they ARE, but for what they DO. And fortunately we have brain and emotion, yet…

Leave your old TV device, don’t trust it anymore, as the colour times, and more recently, HD times, there’s a new revolution out there : social voice. I tried therefore, times ago, to demonstrate some changes in TV world, and gave some points of view of what was our holy toy, in such social fields, and I must be right now in front of no way path : what build TV today, in these times with such collaborative initiates ? Is there any time anymore for journalism or are we all, some of them ? what can make the difference between speaks on great major channels, and individual advises, thoughts and comments ?

That it is, the way we arrived now.

Yes it did. The crowd of information, people thoughts, social revolution of ideas, tumbled down all we taught about value circle in TV world. How ?

TV’s interest is about entertainment, information, direct live, and represent anything but having a window on the world, live, without any move from your sofa. But nowadays, and since many years, Web makes it better. Why ?

Because we’re fed up spending too much time, wasting hours in front of TV soaps and nut stuffs, and we find so much infinite possibilities on web, enforced by 2.0 apps, and supported by many communities. God gave us speaking abilities (and writing too). But TV say “no, we don’t need to, just sit down, shut-up, look and listen…”. And web 2.0 gave us the rules booklet to use words.

How did the web lead the main changes on actual TV ?

Before : there was one channel, in black and white, everybody was looking the same things, and no hope for conversation and two ways relation ; a one to all market !

Then, technologies appeared : colors, high definition, digital, sound, time delay and shifting devices ; thousands of channels, for a one to many market, but with broadcast limits : the even new ways of broadcasting (digital terrestrial, satellite, or DSL/cable), can’t lead to the royal state : one to one channel, private channel that I’m the program controler, and decide myself WHAT and WHEN, I’m gonna look.

Now, Web (first tech, then uses) entered the dance, and recently 2.0 fields. What changed ?

1) technology : with DSL access, you can build your own network (friends, pictures, video…), that can be compared to “my web” ; as if the web was divided by numbers of users, and each user could easily create its own ; and the story of Web3.0, leading you to personal networks (beyond personal contents), starts to see some “UG Networks”

2) contents : UGC ; great or bad world…

– great for creation and enrichment of freedom and abilities ; a new field of playing with your neighbours, without knowing him yet, leveraging the individual potentials (musicians, writers…)

– bad for piracy, because, nothing ever belongs to no one ; or must I say, people think they can take, copy everything on their own without paying anything ; some music bands have given up hope of making money with their music, and win money on concerts and shows… ; and you find in several places in dark places on the web, movies that are not on screen yet…especially in DivX form ; who owns what ?

– contents on the web are growing faster than TV ones ; because of costs, probably, and profusion of new 2.0 applications every day, that adds cleverness to others existing yet : feeds, multi-posting, mobile/live (see for example twitterfone, for saving time spent on writing…)

3) use : PC screen (and mobile devices) replaced TV one

– as you can do anything from mobile device (PDA, phones, PC…), you can watch “a kind of TV”, chosing between TV live, Video on Demand, Catchup TV, downloading…Vlog, Blogs and so long ; it’s like the cake is always the same size, but several eaters entered to share it…leading each piece fewer…

– time : we don’t live right now, how we did twenty years ago. “At a time, a use” ; success of recording and time-shifting is growing ; but don’t solve anything in your “part of time”, of entertainment. When you’re tied within a time, you make your own choices and refuse to be under influence of classical TV ; you make your own, watching social web. Personnay, although I worked on it several years, I understand the escape of time toward the web…Less you have time, more your choice is accurate

4) last but not least, freeness…To get TV contents with value (actual, blockbusters, or live sports…) you paid the high price…And when you already paid the device, the service (VoIP, Web access…), how much money stay in your wallet…?

Welcome to kind UGC’ers, and the infinite land of creation. And for ones who wait for their awards, they can anyway enter in Second Life to get a virtual one…;-)

I must admit at first, the answer would not going out from my mouth such easily…But, it’s an enough attracting field to mind some time about it. 

Considering TV phases evolutions (here, a past post), we see an amazing window of the world, of our world, and how it evolves. But causes produce effects. Effects on TV, are always user’s generated, some by fashion snifs, some by trend setters, some by random (yes sometimes…), and even by professionnals (of course !), but always in the tail of something much deeper : search of audience. Great. But which audience ? Any good head of programs, can see that there’s a lot of different audiences, just like you can find all kind of crackers on any store ! Let’s see what we can stare today about different roles of modern TV :

– entertainment : yes, we do ; everybody does, with its own profile, themes, and daily shows. Can we act on TV ? polling, trying to be live in a show, complaining…a kind of action, which is nothing else that guided by fear of several majors networks to lose their audiences, obliged them in a shape of “customer/user” relationship,  which is not really a big deal so far.

– information : yes, too ; what kind ? too much information, drive information to be a show, more than delivering news to/from the world ; is CNN right now an information channel, or delivering fiction ? There must be a doubt about that sometimes…

– learning : yes, but there is some great differences in several countries ; I guess this is one of the most important play of TV in the next future years, to make things right by satellite anywhere, adding deserted zones, wireless…But so far, it’s more faster on the web now, and more pleasant to do. And trusty, too.  

– useless time : it exists when we use to stay and don’t come to the right decision : switch off. And this time of brain is particularly wealthy for ads performers ; no injure, no violence, “medium is message” said Mc Luhan years ago ; we just mind that it was on TV, but what…still the question. But brain is available, not in social connection, in a vegetable one 😉

– sex : yes, of course, more and more, everywhere, (in soap and ads…) ; mirror of our weird times, where no one can meet anymore but by the web, wire connected, digital profiles, sometimes unreal in SL ; so what, is this called social so far ?

So, in one word if I can, TV can broadcast all that makes a social trusty tool, but…TV gives, but doesn’t receive from anyone. You can have in one place full of interesting things, but never have to react, not even have the ability to. You can amuse, learn, lose your time (!). But so far, not the rich way, you can on social web, where all can be shared and exchanged in one minute, for free, with thanks, congrats and kindness…with the best you can find, when you have some skills to stare and listen…

We can’t still figure out how our uses has changed. Even our old inhabits must get new skin, in daily reflexes. For long times, Search engines and portals gave the tune, and made the market’s raise. And always driven to never stop evolution, Google and friends, had to show the way, and give more and more. They succeed, in a single concept, copied next by most competitors. “Mess with best, and die with the rest” could be otherwise the timeline and the basements of such corps. As in lots of others fields of industry, many things have changed because of…people…customers…you…us.

Yesterday’s rules won’t ever pass the test, because people, by power of technologies revolution, has so many ways to be more clever, in real time and always connected mind. And give the answer to many problems of brands, with interesting ways : passionned, motivated (often more than own employees), saving time more than ever, and the worst/best : being able to do it again. You found out what the message is, on UGC basements, open source advices, comments, and so long.

Technology makes possible to find thousands of results, by SEO, in one second. Thousands, yes, the only one that we want, maybe no ; thousands of results yes, most of them noisy results ! Fortunately, there’s some brain inside, and these techs are really evolved indeed. But social media, computing, sharing, etc, is more targeted ; more friendly ; more efficient. Try it, ask a question on apps such twitters, facebook and so long and get the answer…in a few seconds ! stars and experts are online 24/7, to give you the best answer, for free ! And even if you look for more, some others buddies are going to start chatting, and raise the level of the topic and give you, more and more. Flowers of wiki, with the user’s code, aways listening, then purposing, sharing, in a circle of friends, always devoted to your personal desires and searches. Let me know if, for a while, it looks like better than bots, isn’t it…?
 
I’m often questionning myself about spending time on such lines and how many times will it go on, but imagine, in the “old ways”, how it would have been less fun, without it. It makes a part of my life ; personal, professionnal, and cross over frontiers and differences. I think about this, as the missing link, the digital link in our lives, invisible but always ready to help us, in any case ; and I hope it will go on, bigger and warmer than ever.

It’s a fact, we have a permanent use of digital media nowadays, around and principally, of PC devices. Look how laptops sells rise each day, to feel more than a fly on the wall phenomenia. This reveals new behaviors about how we use contents : video, mails, pictures, voice…TV staring. Too much screens, for too much uses ; how can I manage for it ? where do I decide now where to watch TV, to read my e-mails, to see my holiday’s pictures ?

And goes on the slow but certain issue of digital devices wedding. Which one is gonna win ?

PC, for a longtime because of power, was a right one, but today’s electronic devices like TV, recorders, etc, are built like PC, with power CPU ; video games devices have stepped double since the last 5 years…

TV stays today, the only point of meeting, in main room of the house, before everyone vanished, turned to others usings, more personal. But Nintendo’s Wii is an amazing example of retrieving family heart, because all family can play together, instead of video games market for a single pleasure in the past years.

However we are in front of the move, we also can see, confusion of consuming behavior of contents on PC. We see, on business time, exploding the use of media content, with 3 peaks : banking on morning, and e-mails review ; entertainment (Youtube or others) at noon and trafic jam informations or cinema boards on the early evening.

General Manager considers it’s an logical evolution of fast time information and Web opportunities, but staying Twittering for 4 hours a day at desk, is this a reasonable way ?

We can always tell, we win times for our job and reinvest in personal goals….
