Between 22th and 24th of 2013, September was organized the “socialgood event”, by @mashable and other partners, to share and plan about how digital and social could help building a better future (#2030now).

It’s been years from now that many conferences bloomed (TED, Ignite, SXSW…) rising talents, needs and desire for social features. Panels, keynotes, witnessing…so many opportunities to learn and share this new awesome passion for collaboration spaces. I like these moments. They remind me some fantastic steps like:

1)   I meet there the “social chance…”

…to challenge my opinions and my environment. I like listening to an expert, solving or preventing a new challenge, these events allow to get straight to the point. In a single event, I can learn many things and meet many experts and can network with them. I live in what I call “the human-linked network”

2)   I’m a link like you: a huge network to play…

…where my incredible passion for human contacts calls for more: it engages me to a challenging posture and a more interactive life, with more transparency and trust.. “This is not a matter of quantity but more a mindset of creativity, passion and engagement”. I did it my quote, because that really changed my mind.

3)   I dream like you to invent the future

…what’s more beautiful to overtake results, expectations and outputs. The digital posture makes us more interactive and creative people, who are more concerned in creating the future. I became “addict” of this on going relation where I share insights anytime and anywhere. “the trend is there, and the long tail is wide…”

4)   I create with many folks, things that are built to stay…

…hey wait a minute? There’s nothing more “valuable” than creating together, in a same team. This new vision is settled for a long time. The increasing need to be listened and the signs of working together call for a whole participation, in the new “crowd innovation”. Innovation  “from people, for people” , a complete new framework that redefines relations, power and working circles. The ones that companies break to implement in structures and project management, where decision has nothing to see with hierarchy or power. Widen against top-bottom reactions, to engage and become more social.

5)   I believe that social graph attracts social…

…the incredible passion for collaborative calls for many initiatives and draws talents.  Youngest or oldest, everybody is involved, crossing frontiers, cultures and generations. Technology forced us to overcome our fears and do what was impossible: communicate and share the next big pictures. “The more you pratice, the more you like”. This is now finally my lifestyle.

Are you already part of it? In which way, actions, outputs? Please share and tell your social life, as an incredible window for us to learn more…

Yes. The thing everybody finally searches all his life, believing in the new Graal. I agree with the incredible effects of happiness on personal life, behavior, social interaction, business relations or any kind of relation though. But it’s all but arithmetic or automatic device you turn on or off, as you want to. Happiness must not be considered as a final goal, but more as a lifestyle, in the simpliest steps of life. We have all daily opportunities to measure, value and share “samples of happiness” with any situation: short talk, lesson, meeting, dinner, party…

HappinessInside

Waiting for happiness can appear to be too long, but including it in each gesture, posture or action gives you an incredible experience of instant pleasure and valuable time. Not focusing on the single result can bring you a more pleasant “fly”, trip to the next steps of your life. And the way you drive and lead your action is really important as a gift for any of your interactions: be pleased without justifying with anyone in sharing knowledge, information and wisdom.

Now, it’s time to care about our happiness and share whenever it’s possible. Because we all deserve it…

I stare at something said to be “new”, the new social timeline called “Pheed”, that is supposed to meet a facebook cross social link with a multimedia timeline (Twitter+Youtube+G+…). Big deal or not?

The previous innovation like “paying walls”, standing in a premium model for contents as “pay-per-view” principle is really risky, while there is so much piracy and virality, around the world in a few seconds, sweeping copyrights, patents and barriers in few clics. They bet today on a special private teasing, with celebrities, somewhat like the music world has been tumbled down with piracy and search for another revenue source, playing with “fans attraction” considering they will be able to pay for such private and exclusive contents. In this case, whatever our beliefs, what’s the deal and the size of the potential threat to other timelines?

Balancing his audience from place to place is somewhat dangerous, even if you’re a rock star…Lots of celebrities who opened a private space should ask themselves: how many of them will follow their tracks to Pheed, and the deepest needs they will follow then? But we must not throw the idea too early, because, while twitter and facebook are late in their ability to make real “money”, Pheed is so straight forward in its expectations, that we see clearly where the value is: celebrities. Where twitter created “certified accounts” but didn’t value them, Pheed seems decided to make these “stars” bankable, with a clear model: subscribing or “per view” access to exclusive contents. Fair enough, it gives what fans wait for.

Talking about design and interface, the user experience targets younger audiences of  “fans”, allowing them to request for more “exclusive contents” from their favourite stars. It’s quite a “multimedia” console, “twitter-like”, with easier access to any media you want to push: text, audio, video, picture, RSS. Talking about contents, so called provided by premium stars, we could doubt an instant on the ability of “trust” and reliance for these contents: another huge machine for promotion by majors’ marketing teams. So there’s probably teens or even younger targets, who could pay to be addicted to more relevant contents for their idols, but who pays in fact? Parents. And where’s the limit they would cross to satisfy their children?

In fact, do we still have to call Pheed another “social network/platform”, where any content is probably driven by money and influence of large marketing machines? Social means “hey, I spent more money than you with ‘idol’ one” account…Big deal so far but who cares? Another teen toy, to addict them to brand, star life and virtual world…Is it the kind of education we want for our children, where’s the lesson for life that Pheed is supposed to “display” to this catcha target?

1millionUBut beyond all, it could become a targeted cash machine, another “content channel” dedicated to closer relations between fans and stars. Where you see Youtube launching several thematical channels, you can understand social platforms as more than twits and chats, building their whole environment, like old loyalty programs with physical cards. Lead into this environment, fans may consume lots of things, including contents but goodies and more stuff from the brand. There’s no such way to link Pheed to Facebook’s fans pages…And make it the cash machine for focused and premium content? But so far, Stars’ facebook official pages and published contents are free right now…? So is there a chance it could become successful on Pheed?

I don’t finally know where is the frontier between “social” which is the way we share and chat about “things, subjects and passions”) and “paying shop” where the final goal is simply “buy” something rare and exclusive. Can it be something sustainable enough to make and keep audience, in a long period, to create a huge database that stands for anything else than “making money”?

If Pheed becomes the “twitter that likes cash”, it may find the way to revenue faster, but more targeted. Is it then a big picture or will stay a fashion fever surfing on social passion? Future will tell us…

One thing is sure: “No need for Pheed, but some will greed”

The global revolution about social platforms, from uses to communication changes is rising far and far, dealing with reputation,

techs inputs, buzz and new handlings. Citizens, politics, economics through all sectors have been troubled with the hidden movement no one guessed.

Surfing with fear, doubts but also huge opportunities, the subjects dealt with several conferences all around the world. And we can see how information now flows in a few seconds on the planet, information shaped sometimes with “leaks”, keeping us alive about democracy, transparency but bearing in mind, dangers around: fake, hoax, unverified…the best and the worst indeed, as we face the impacts of e-democracy, shouted by so many citizens in the Arab spring, but fooled when buzzing a false rumor about French notation.

Today, “passive consumption” is out of fashion: we need trust, advice, experience. Sharing, comments and branding reputation. We’ll never be the same again, because “technology changes expectations”. It shapes itself, our deepest desires and the way we express them.

Everybody can now give advice, exploring the core of marketing outside companies, but collaborating and shaping the next product taste.

We need expression. To be heard, consulted, another status than “a number in an anonymous society”. Social media is as the term “a media” and markets are conversations now (Cluetrain Manifesto, 1999).

Considering these obvious situations, I was wondering what could be just next, to take the best of this whole revolution, and leave the rest, keeping barriers to “control” somewhat (is this possible, in the spirit of “WWW”?). We can’t stay in a passive state, where “canaries in coalmines” are the only indicators to draw the future…

So, what’s next: bright development or mistrust and go back to old behaviors?

Let’s stare at some important shifts that took place, these past years…:

  • More transparency, democracy and ability to participate in debates, reactions and sharing
  • More leisure, plays, networking, but much wasted time
  • More interactivity between all parts: brands, citizens, consumers, politics, communities, education, corporate, government…
  • Important changes, I think in a longer term, even physiological behavior: physical writing training, memory loss, information access…
  • Huge pollution in information with a real fence in journalist jobs and the way we consume information but also how we report it

First hypothesis: if we believe in a huge development and growth of social tools, we may spend some attention to keys to do it. Keys which still now, are unachieved but are core to get the essence of the global phenomena. We could talk about:

  • Organize and optimize content, curation and filtering to value information on social platforms
  • Raise professional platforms as references to build « social enterprise » as a global project
  • Build schools, education and knowhow, as a real job and sustainable competence in the future
  • Create official “label” to guarantee content verification and reliance
  • Promote new organization of collaborative working in companies

But in fact, writing this means to me an attempt to more “classical” and normalization of WWW, that is a real touchy subject, where is such freedom, in the initial goals of the internet. And then, the question: is it really possible to “norm”, “control”, the social web?

Until now, I don’t’ really think so. But I think more clear resources and building recipes would improve the game.

We face today high titles like « the end of the internet » or « the end of social », but need to decrypt what could be the next steps with it. A PoSo (Post Social) status, at this point could mean:

  • A next wave with social opportunities
  • A rich and growing professional market for “social” (from now, I’m still doubtful)
  • The new social platform: Apps/Internet (fall of browsing and PC)
  • And an evolved form of “socializing”, more organized, valuable and targeted (fall of gaming, entertainment and wasting time on Facebook so long)

Guidelines, education, strong beliefs and resources to guide the whole topic might be the points to bear in mind for this new wave. In a single quote “consolidate social media tactics to put it into a operational guideline, into the actual ecosocial system”.

Second hypothesis: fed up with too much information, the mistrust feedback could generate a threat that must be studied. All efforts could be wasted, in a two crowded environment. The fact comes with the significant figures where we see the incredible traffic and noise generated by the audience. We would have a reverse revolution where people would start to doubt, stop sharing and participating: an incredible danger for social enhancement…

  • Recovering and taking back to old schemas
  • Increasing costs in communication: old media/traditional ones
  • Mistrust in sourcing information
  • Changes in tech: network, availability, service levels, privacy enforcement…
  • No more credit to online reputation

We can have a real risk, a total burnout for social platforms, with the increase of too much information, links, nodes, RT,…noise. The recent wave for curation (scoop-it, Pearltrees…) leads a path to more standardization of content. But in the same way, how do we measure and value the real impact and relevance of so much information? How do we handle secret, confidential R&D, ideas in a whole opened world for social and collaborative exchanges? Which value considered, as information is free, for everyone and anytime? How long will we trust social signals: real big pictures or sparkling fashion?

We’re now seeing the great dangers of going back to old methods, even if new uses are coming: social tv for example has still to be invented, not in tech but for which features?

We must keep the several joys and opportunities of social media, because they are in their complete shape, all the components for a better world: community, respect, collaborative building, sharing and keeping balanced relations. In a word, far beyond simple pleasure and entertainment: Links.

Why links are the future is because there’s with social media one world, only one world, and in this point of view, no need to argue and prove about origins, culture or personal goals: only one language to hold welfare in networks, as a guarantee of sustainable world.

Everybody sees Happiness as an incredible quest, without seeing what’s in front of us. We always search for what we don’t have, forgetting to enjoy the daily simpliest pleasures. It seems to be a real crisis of happiness, while we forgot all we had, as little children, who themselves care for any few thing to come and bite life breathless. We all claim for more, but never organize us to understand, appreciate and consume the situations that could help us to get higher happiness. We just put it on doom, mischance or broken life, never source on ourselves to know us better and find the light inside. It must not be the fault of life. Or others. It might be our fault, just forgetting the meaning that we really put in our life. Consumption became a powerful exposition for fulfill our fitness indicators, and expose others, in order to seduce, capture or trick the game. It must stay pleasure first, as we don’t buy any good but values, brands or attributes…Marketing gurus got their own skills to show you in a mirror, that doesn’t reflect you anymore. We have to seed the “be” against the “have” and be inspired of it.

This summer, I’ve been really inspired, reading two books, under the hot sun of Tunisia. Happier from Tal Ben-Shahar and The Dip, little handbook from Seth Godin. One explaining path to more happiness, with lots of stories, examples and concepts, simply with bright exercises to follow a coherent line into the tale and being able to apply few rules, quite immediatly. I’ve noticed, through this awesome story, the underscored aspects of having in mind the two terms of appreciate pleasure: short-term shots, necessary because they are the fuel of each day we spend, and the deeper elements that shape the “meaning” of a whole life, used as guides, goals or long term sense. And to link both, we have to make a work on ourself to share and balance the benefits, resources and efforts to build something relevant and sustainable. We link then to the other guide by Seth G. about “quitting”, leaving something in our life, on several motivations: fear, doubt, too much effort or energy, difficulty, no more envy, mindset change or whatever that could make us shift. And that’s when this period comes, after the beginner’s chance or the one-shot short-term pleasure, that one must make choice: go on or leave? Who never thought about it or being confronted to a major choice in his/her life?

What does it mean? refusing happiness at the threshold? no pain, no gain?

And I found some correlative coincidences in the fear of the dip and the fact of “consuming” happiness, burning it too fast, without any plan, goal or forecast for meaning and without giving a long-term sense to life. Starting, beginning in something, diving into new experience, company, life need a snap of vision, envy, chance and motivation, but probably less energy because of novelty and curiosity. We all know how to get a small shot of pleasure, in simple few things we can allow us daily with meetings, close and personal thoughts and dedicated moments. But the real problem is to “process” them to make them scalable, sustainable and part of something bigger: goal. A kind of envision with steps to cross, the “complete estimated and fully hope” way of your life to be discovered. But how get to it while you don’t organize the way, the steps? If you consume all your energy, focused on short-term pleasure, when dip is coming, because it always does after a period of “trial”, the feeling of doubt, mistrust or despair will appear. Some will get from this, with lots of energy and target to grow the hard curve. But many won’t, because they will miss the whole vision of “sense” for their life.

But when you take time to set goals for achievements, giving you a “reason-to-live” beyond, you start to draw something more clear and valuable, all along the path…This gives you courage, force and energy, and maybe you won’t spend any time in the dip, surfing on pleasure, all along the steps. I tried to represent the way I figure it, on the second graph. Imagine you have a stairway, where each step is a new challenge, hurdle or thing to achieve, and for each step you will get all your attention to feel, learn and get all the lessons from: you’ll get more profitable time, enjoyable and memorize a lot more than if you don’t get any attention at all. But moreover, you will touch to a higher level of short-term pleasure and you’ll earn it forever. This is the principle of having a far away goal, while spending time to appreciate each part of the path to go there. While consuming your short-term pleasure, you’ll touch a well being level like a trigger, and function with a “ratchet effect”. What you earnt is forever, speaking about welfare level. And that’s a real funny way to share and balance between easy approach to solve daily stuffs, learn and feel, then dreaming of the big picture that makes sense for you. And the best way to get rid of this “haunting” dip, that demands so much efforts, pain and questions for you to go on

The best you plan for the future, the best you can appreciate all the strong steps to go there, and feel all the energy of passing the difficulties of life. “Success calls success” we could tell, like a process circle that gives you motivation, sense but joy in the action. Because a kind of “rat race”, refusing pleasure now for hoping it later is to ascetic, take time to stare the whole story, imagining how you could get tot he peak, enjoying all the phases, encounters and lessons that make the process. “If there’s a goal, there’s a way”, I could add “an enjoyable way”.

Don’t quit, ever, just have an enjoyable trip, reachable goals, reliable and fulfilling milestones, and trust for you to take right decisions with insightful and tuitions mindset. An eye on the horizon goal, the other on daily feelings. You’d better start now…

As I progress in the discovering of social platforms, I meet a whole group of evidences and assumptions, drawing a kind of “best practices” or “most encountered”. And it shapes as the long way of spending time to build something strong and sustainable. I tried to underline the long tail to truth and trust, that magnify the social network pleasure. and compared players as “assets”, who valued, time, participation and relevance to build global community value.

On my way, I borrowed some elements to BCG, and famous matrix for companies’ portfolio, to make a similar research between players, engagement and value (even if I don’t really like the term for a free global chain of collaboration). We can find some common facts with “influencers”, in the way participation seems to be quite in relation with popularity and influence, as soon as there is relevance in sharing and talk. Don’t forget before act, listen is the first key to understanding the global noise…

I found 3T as key concept to build and walk into social engagement: Time that goes, Trust which raise as you are relevant and reliable, and Truth. But where does start truth? And when does it trigger, in the global involvement? Who is responsible of truth, and what gives us total control on it?

Everyone involved in such process has one day, crossed through this concepts of starting blind, taking direction in the dark forest of web links, RSS and informations. And Everyone may be recognized now in a complete profile or way. But one thing I know for sure: the most famous one is probably the quietest, spending time to “time”, and taking it to mesure each part of encountering and thinking. You can go fast and touch the stars, but also crash you down. Building trust needs time, and giving credit to “your” truth too.

As you can stare, there’s probably a long tail too for relations…those who can count on. Social media means at start, discovering, listening and staring lots of noise, events, posts and information. Some you can hate, some you can like. But anyway this is not the most important thing to bear in mind. What we can stand is that at this step, lots of people don’t go on and vanish. On 10 people, there’s probably 3 who continue their quest and maybe only 1 who can stay in a long term investment…That means lots of dead end and “lost” time…I used quotes as I don’t really think it, because any path can learn you something, that can be used one day.

Leaving the first step needs humility, in starting the conversation: finding relevant topic, adding ideas that raise the debate and giving al for nothing. World of exchange, without any “return on investment” mindset, that’s the long story of growing influence. Influence you sometimes wait for a long time and like a boomerang, comes back to your ears: your first “friend”. The one who comment and found attention to your thoughts.

First dead end: blacklist, bulshit and boring people. You met them, and wish they leave, kind of forrest gump 2.0, lots of troubled guys who pollute the sheer timeline of conversation. Yes, it’s an entertainment too, but spamming for fun (eg as fun is sometimes too individual…and may be misunderstood) spread some fog about the collaborative efficiency. I won’t speak about blacklisted (spammer, followers hunters, robots?, rude people or “no limit” behaviors). Stop. They stopped themselves, killed, suicided.

But you may prefer the royal way, gearing up your condition, finding your vocation and spending time enough to have a rocket path to heaven: if you work in PR or decide to use blogs and communities for your own carrier, you can become a star…A-list influencers get there quickly, but this needs a lot of investments:

  • be relevant “best shot at best time” and learn how to improve it
  • find the good viral spots: you have to show they are right to trust you
  • be “liked”, guess like the famous FB button
  • always listen and reward your audience: many thanks, RT or spreading the news…for nothing of course
  • share, share and share: “dare web square for share”; don’t miss an opportinity to be useful and help someone in request or trouble…

I could (you can comment too) add bunches of others things you should do…but there’s one that you must not miss: be yourself. there’s nothing more boring that discovering a hidden (bad) face/side, having been faked…some taste of bitterness that never goes out. But that’s life, you might be exposed to.

I would like now make a short trip, next to “social capital”, that helps you to swim easily in these oceans. I’ve been whispered and somekind, blowed with a new wind of “socialization”. Carried with the new “whuffie effect” book from Miss Rogue (called Tara Hunt in real life, from Canada), blogging at horspigcow(dot)com. No, not with animals, but with her verse of social capital, kind of never ending asset we can grow with. Another way to discover the power of human relations, growing inside that can move mountains in fact, if we train it and know how to get the best with it. Still there, no particular rule but be perfectly straight, honest and right with your audience, never trying to exploit it without agreement and rewards in someways. Is this the new asset, if we can really talk about “assets”? I would say yes while it’s a long time run, and asks lots of time to see the sparkle of enlightment…And that’s why lots of fellows give up before…Don’t confuse “speed of reaction” of web interactions with be too in the hurry…

And then comes the real path…poetic, chaotic and progressive, it drives you step after step to different horizons and levels that give you piece of experience: experience is a fuel that addicts you to more and reveals sometimes a hidden face of your personality (tip: second lives in gameplays…). This way is set with several encounters, informations and aggregations that build your own circle of influence, your “X-ray” footprint in network walks. A fairy tale? Maybe. A tale? Sure if you decide to be a storyteller too, giving others the best, with nothing to give but enthusiasm, kindness and experience. It took time to build web network infrastructures, standards and wires. It takes time to play with it, even if speed and our ability to zap is increasing, digesting more for more is crap. Time to get Trust, Time to tell the Truth. and Time to enjoy being in a tremendous network, spreading thoughts and opinions. For real, for fun and for mankind.

Social web and the new play for information has scrambled rules of former process for distribution of power and information. The simple idea, in thinking that “one”, at the peak of the pyramid can hold now all the power is so stupid…And this concept may be extended to “A-list”, so called influencers, while we figure out and dream that they can decide for your future (eg your company or your products), or decide of your life or death. In fact, we must not focus on this dumb fake reality, not that they are not listened or respected, nor they don’t have any influence, but they don’t have the monopole of spreading the buzz. And some may be more effective than ever…You see? You guess? You bet?

You. You as a customer, as a simple citizen. Anyone has a circle of reference, value and thinking and influence his own private circle. And that’s the mass, the so called “mass marketing” that can be more effective and buzzing, than a happy few “top of pyramid”, who turn around together, recycling their ideas, comfortable with a “kind of mindset”, sometimes unplugged from reality. As you start to meet some social nodes, you’re in contact with a whole ecosystem of information, that leads you in a kind of influence as well. And those little stones you grow make a silent but strong way to a certain kind of influence. Fastcompany tried to mesure the randomize influence of lots of people, in launching the influence project.

ThoughtLead, another social agency organized the shortest trial, for influence thinking, in creating shots for 60 influencers, in short talks or thoughts, for a 60 minutes session. Another way to spread quickly a fast debate on many influencers mindset.

What I found in all these projects is that small groups around a simple topic get their way to a particular sport of influence…So big bloggers can drive you fast and high, but there’s nothing more efficiency than the “long tail of influencers”. Finding your own local circle of passion, chat and meetings can assure you a long and constant effect, sustainable. And that’s brighter than a short shot with a passing star: could a “A-list” start remind you, even if you spend a while with him/her? I probably say no. Influence is a complex concept, that means that the thing to be influenced is ready for it, and the noise and environment too. Readiness of the market and regular word-of-mouth with local folks can rise you far ahead. Buzz is so unpredictable that you’d rather trust on constant and flowing network than stars that shine only one day…Remember next time you’ll meet a A-star, not to wait too much, but taking a good time, as any link to your personal network: you’ll receive only what you’ll give.

Chris Brogan’s work brings a stone more on this tricky subject as influence. The way is really long to build, grow, maintain and in some ways, moderate such communities. But it’s for sure, worthy, more than one star encounter and fill your inheritage of spreading the news and the buzz. How? Simply by doing what you like…sharing, listen and take part of this worlwide silent long tail of knowledge. Brian Solis himself, engages ourselves in a total “bliss”, considering influence as the ability to cause desirable and measurable actions and outcomes”. And so different than popularity that consists only on a passing action, that not stays no more in our minds. Influence is when people talk about you and your outcomes, your thoughts or ideas, making them spread. Popularity is a static concept as you may be appreciated, but not “retweeted”, not viralized…And that makes all the difference between one shot and a long, ongoing action…

In this forest of “friends”, forget about the so called leaders and follow your intuition to build your own 6-degrees-of-separation scale of influence. And start by doing your best as a link to listen and spread any comment, thought ou idea you find interesting. Influence is not a passive state but a real job…in building strong and sustainable relations with active and solidary members. The human web is endless link to more humanity, friendness and care for others. Influence starts as you do something for free…just for pleasure. A viral pleasure.
