In fact, there’s a growing revolution inside. The most weird thing is that it comes from where raw materials are scarce, the opposant scary and no means. The initial innovation, consuming and wasting capital and buried in pyramidal and lone structures could play its last chance. “Jugaad”, that means “breakthrough growth” or “coping with innovation” in Hindi plays a new role for innovation. More flexible, open and simple. Something to reboot ourselves and renew true mindset, to give hope to despair mass and create a ongoing movement to new creation.
Jugaad Innovation is defined around 6 principles, where collaborative thinking and acting are king:

  • Search for opportunities in adversity: most of the times, any company gives up facing adversity or difficulty, because of wasting time, money or fearing of failure. We all prefer comfort zones to risk. Then comes Juggad that draws energy and interest from adversity and resistance. Jugaad brings pride, energy and passion to overcome the obstacle. Learn to deal with adversity is one of the keys of Jugaad Innovators, like a new innovation mindset.
  • Do more with less: we may soon live with less. Less raw materials, less growth, less employment, less time…It’s now time to do more with less, re-use things designing them differently. Reinvent different uses and reinvent ourselves. Think for example to use wastes for others capabilities, without being obliged to recycle them. When you live all days with adversity and obstacles, you quickly find solutions with simple existant stuffs. We use to rethink many ways we do and reprocess simply. When tough times are, we must find economic solutions, and the Jugaad method may be relevant and sustainable…to stay ahead of competition
  • Think and act in a more flexible way: big companies organize themselves with hard and complex structures of R&D in long term process that don’t faciltate short term and simple reactions. They don’t (can’t) think flexible way. They keep things complex because they forgot how to think simple. they ignore low cost solutions because they think high value, with large margins. They simply forget customer centric solutions offering complex R&D outputs, outputs that customer don’t want anymore. Cycles get longer, heavy processing, heavier than ever. Capital and resources expenses explode and innovation is not obvious but struggled into secrecy, keeping the cover on patents. This is outpast in the collaborative mindset we live in now. With Jugaad and its ongoing and lean process. that can’t work anymore. Innovation must catch all the few opportunities with few and simple attitudes. The mindset centric thinking and action are mixed into a twirling process, that evolves simply with the single needs of consumer. What has to be created is only what has to be consumed.

  • Target simplicity: never forget “keep it shortly simple”. It seems so obvious for Jugaad mindset, even if make simple is in fact complex. The hardline is that rebuild something from a complex base is really hard, so when you think Jugaad, you start from nothing. You can be light, efficient and straight to the point. Something that big companies forgot, while they keep secrecy on their R&D and innovatios plans. It’s the art of secret and the obsession for technologies or complex buildings with over engineering. Focus on the pure need, focus on value for customer not for company is the only true way to simplicity. The Jugaad process allows the direct thinking to direct needs. Meeting with daily problems, finding daily solutions, directly useful. The direct response for smart innovation.
  • Inclusive innovation: Through structure itself, because of resources consumption and innovation heaviness, the mainstream innovation is mainly for “mass market”, simply because companies couldn’t balance huge R&D expenses with poor markets. Innovation is rarely for disabled people while it could change their life and build a whole story for them. Bringing innovation in middle-class draws wastes and add only a marginal output. It’s a shamy situation where digital fence exists and all efforts might be to reduce it and build a fair world for all. Next to this, the experimentations from “bottom of the pyramid” ou BOP, showed interesting outputs but underlined the limits of “poor segments”: double sentence. As they already have “nothing” the price paid for each single unit is far more expensive than in normal markets. That’s where Jugaad is really different is that solutions are not built by huge companies but by and for local and isolated people. A kind of ABC for exclusion and the ability to include them. The inclusive innovation.

  • Follow heart power and tuition: the notion I prefer far from all others, put some passion and heart in process thinking, doing only what people need and not what he desires. This is one of the great lessons for example, leading to extreme simplification for use and not for engineers’ pride. Focus on needs, engage with local communities, friend with them, learn their daily life is more efficient than any business process or school. Spending time on few essentials lead to main outputs. Don’t forget Steve Jobs who never ever asked anything to a customer, no need to inspire and build what he did. Only his tuitions and faith in design, experience and simplification seemed to draw his whole life. Heart and passion nurture the whole fuel for action, leadong to Jugaad inspire. We may all take the path…

A true and strong revolution, I’m convinced. The one in centuries, beyond fashion and cycles. Maybe there’s already a Jugaad innovator close to you. Neighbour. Travel encountering. Someone valuable for sure. Someone to meet, share and learn from. Respect, Recycle and Reboot. Time to (re)use what we have and (re)invent everything we have, differently. It’s a matter of inclusion, hope and innovation.

Jugaad, our inclusive future, shared with passion.

“Objects now become kind of chatterbox and the world shifts as an huge connected information system”

Yes we must now consider objects as a real part of social movement, even if social genuinely means « interaction between two human beings », they can enter the game of socialization…How far, when, for which uses/features? Future will tell…

2020: 20 Billions of connected objets; which ones, which services behind and for which uses? What might we face in organizations, skills, value chains and industries?

« We don’t GO on the WWW, we are IN the WWW » (J. de Rosnay, 2008). In this case we can’t ignore the new environment in which we’re living, wired, connected, localized, targeted…? What is our trigger of rejection or how far will we go, in including this obsessing world, that is up to us more and more.

That is to say with many questions to push ourselves in another world, framed with robots, domotics, and domestic suppliance, increasing interrogations about the destiny, goals and playing field. While complete digital revolution leads to many disasters in balanced industries, destroying employment in short term, what could bring more automation of flows, relations and process?

For the opportunistic point of view, it’s far from now, several huge enhancements to come, in a larger scale for domestic, economic and social matters. When coming to mass market, leading the wheel can be an astonishing venture in sectors like:

  • Tracing products, animals, reducing sanity risks and increasing the visibility on nurturing, growing in real time
  • Improvements on supply chains and « just in time », reducing stock wastes and better control
  • Equipment for handicapped people or old people, to enhance daily life with smart objects or function, and for health monitoring with things like flesh sensors (EES2) or with connected wifi body scale from Withings
  • Production improvement with robots like farming robots
  • Monitor, schedule and show the mass of available energies for a town, area or more, increasing the action on it and on the way we consume it: something making possible ups and downs and informing people when and how to use it (see an example with dontflushme)
  • Connected cities with huge projects involving simple objects with new roles and useful faces like intelligent pavements in Toulouse, France that supplies energy when you walk on them or ”Simplicity” project from Keiichi Matsuda (Domesti/City) and LivingPanIT, future tools for bright cities. Check also Songdo City in South Korea, aimed to welcome more than 75.000 citizens in 2014
  • Lifestyle environment: domestics, visual and personal comfort, intelligent paper with paperzoom, or fridges ordering themselves what’s relevant for the household’s needs, relating to stock or food desires. Taking in count the necessary monitoring of your weight, mood or health state
  • Self-domestic with « things » like green plants, furniture, design…), the silent communication (“utility” for house domestics, alone…)

While we see lots of interesting opportunities, we may consider the downsides and potential dangers that come with digital era, and could explode with the complete participation of connected objects, like :

  • Hacking: with the economic exploitation for the silent information war: stocks, financial system, gold and raw materials, everything that could trick valuation but also nuclear and military settlements connected in some ways could be hackable…
  • What about electronic polls and the ability to cheat and trick democracy?
  • Tomorrow, school and exam results may be built by machines, increasing the ability to exploit a fault in the whole chain and leading to discredit of levels and graduations?
  • How far build and trust open data: do we fight to show anything we can (see Pachube), a whole community lead site with usermoderation and the degree of trust that is questioned so far?
  • Automatic terminals that guide, manage and secure aerial traffic, train regulation and so long: who can we trust, relating to security matters?
  • Telco system with parallel ways (social networks) with lots of information publicly available everywhere, because no one can verify the sense, truth capital and relevance?

Very hard times in trying to imagine the different faces and practical aspects of this new behavior, allowing objects to be linked and part of the global conversation. From now, protocols have already shifted to new (with for example ipv6), to welcome and hold the huge growth of connections, increased by the participation of these smart objects…But as any physical people, we can see “reputation” and need of protection of digital identity. Some solutions like myID.is or myid.com will probably grow to guarantee the trustiness and truthfulness of exchanges and conversations. That means the identification must be on the object level and not necessary on the object’s owner level, who can change

We all already know that mobile devices and mobile behavior will be the dominant platform for datas, communication and entertainment tomorrow, then mobile web and connected objects will stand as  beacons of business in this incredible story.

There’s probably something attractive with everything seeming to be linked and connected. Just like losing our innocence, our ability to “think” and hold a sheer relation. When it’s about progress, one can be ready for anything to rock the boat…But how far? We’re still in the growth for “just” only fighting poverty and analphabetism and increasing digital uses may lead to writing mistakes and in the end, complete lack of knowledge about it! What about grammar, syntax, style effects that create a conversation and build a codified exchange between humans?

We so have to consider all these opportunities, integrating them into a whole ecosystem before they take control of us…Give rules, a place for everyone and everything, including interactive roles in our lives and dream about new “social networks for objects.” And then, pray that objects will invite us in their circle, where they will exchange datas, signals…conversations? A binary world from 0 to 1…

But who will be responsible for these shared contents or actions lead by the connected objects? Which legal matters: The owner? The user? The network?

In fact a subject not really new, that takes some time to land off but whose applications will help in many sectors with strong uses like breaking the digital rupture, domestics compliance and lots of local and practical innovations. Then « objects went social » could have been a HG Wells book. Shall we say « social » talking about objects when described as « media which enable interactivity between two or more humans »?

Design was made to be “beautiful”. But Design is often taken with high-class skill, upper income matter and modern life. What we call Design in industrial tracks seems particularly the crafting, building and a whole process to “define a creation environment that makes life and goods and services more smart, useful and profitable for the end-user”. Now some kinds of use are so simple that we think they don’t “need” Design at all, like something complicated and expensive.

Any doubt?

Check out at all these awesome initiatives done with the poor and above all, from the bottom roots…of desperate lands. No you can’t stop initiatives and control the path that guides to innovation. No wealth can replace the willingness and local solutions, facing misery, fell apart when you have no resources to use, but brain and collaboration. Simple ideas can sometimes burst poor’s destiny to help them, but especially when they have no other choice to cope with it, alone. And yes what we call “Design” can change their world. Using wastes to make in function local and shared open-air ovens, text messaging to prevent from disease, explain sanity or water use or like in Bangkok to replace old crap houses, they used recycled wood to build stronger and safer habitations.

But also facing a huge need for mobile work, the ability to build “mobile schools” on a bus or a boat, that can hold education, following the whole migration of households lead to rootless work to survive. Then, the famous design museum “Cooper-Hewitt” started with UN, a huge exposition “design with other 90 cities” with this tremendous thema, in NYC this fall. This exposition allows to introduce the design into several parts of communities, using it as: include (lose people, recovering the social link into ghettos), transform (wastes or the way to consider things and buildings for a better local welfare), exchange (a huge way to barter skills and local knowhow for moneyless people), reveal and adapt (habits make sometimes lazy, avoiding us to recreate new environment with less resources), prosper (with all the global dynamic through this whole initiative, leading to local economic raise and employment for new ways of “working”).

What called Schumpeter “innovation”, seems to drafted here as “something in pulse, moving economics and social, creating new products, things or services with the whole dynamics of organization (in this case local and poor groups, probably fell apart and helpless populations)”. He believed a lot in entrepreneurship as a real source of innovation for economic dynamization, and we can see in all these examples, the “force of nature” and the potential in the willingness to change their local world. But entrepreneurship doesn’t mean “a restricted way inside huge companies, brands or startups”. Some used it their own way, with lean management, aside with local communities to overcome their needs: kind of proud, willingness to live better and especially count only on their own…and destiny. It used to work with developping nations, when investment from richest countries disappeared, leading local groups to another way of subsistance: using and creating new oceans to live, with redesigning landscapes, habits and means.

Obviously, a particularly sharp and interesting lesson for us, balancing between bright, opportunism and ideas sourcing for a better world. Don’t miss the curve because it’s full of insights for developped world too, while earth is aching and resources seem to be compromised…
